New Study Highlights Physical Symptoms of Varicose Veins

Apr 18, 2025

At Nordic Health Group, we continually seek to enhance our understanding of patient experiences to deliver superior care across our clinics in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands, and the UK. In a recent comprehensive study involving 7,960 patients, we examined the prevalence and combinations of physical symptoms associated with varicose veins.

Study Overview

Distribution of Varicose Veins:

  • Both legs: 52.1%

  • Left leg only: 25.2%

  • Right leg only: 22.7%

Most Frequently Reported Physical Symptoms:

  • Swelling: 29.5%

  • Pain: 27.4%

  • Heaviness: 24.8%

  • Itching: 11.1%

  • Fatigue: 6.1%

  • Cramps: 5.1%

  • Sores: 2.5%

Patients could report multiple symptoms, underscoring the complex nature of varicose vein conditions.

Key Symptom Combinations:

  • Swelling and pain: 351 patients

  • Swelling and heaviness: 269 patients

  • Swelling, heaviness, and pain: 103 patients

These findings highlight the significant impact of physical discomfort on patients' quality of life. Notably, combinations such as swelling with pain and heaviness illustrate that varicose veins often involve multiple symptoms, amplifying patient discomfort.

Effective Modern Treatments

Importantly, all reported physical symptoms—swelling, pain, heaviness, itching, fatigue, cramps, and sores—are treatable thanks to advanced modern varicose vein treatments. Minimally invasive procedures such as laser therapy and foam sclerotherapy contribute to significantly improved outcomes, reducing symptoms and restoring patient comfort and mobility.

Future Directions

We plan to further analyze patient satisfaction, treatment types, effectiveness, and the typical duration patients experience symptoms before seeking help. These insights will help us refine our services and better address patient needs, ensuring consistently high-quality care.
